03 / zone rules
Zone rule summaries
The three zones do not share one rule set. The complete GFCM Recommendation GFCM/44/2021/2 remains authoritative.
-
Zone A
Professional fishing with bottom-set nets, bottom trawls, set longlines, and traps is prohibited, as is recreational fishing. Purse seines and pelagic trawls targeting anchovy or sardine are also prohibited.
-
Zone B
The listed bottom-contact and set gears are prohibited from 1 September through 31 October each year. Outside that period, specific authorization applies: authorized vessels may fish no more than two fishing days per week, and otter twin trawl vessels no more than one fishing day per week. Purse seines and pelagic trawls targeting anchovy or sardine remain prohibited.
-
Zone C
Seasonal prohibitions apply from 1 September through 31 October, including recreational fishing. Otherwise, authorized bottom trawlers may fish only on Saturdays and Sundays from 05:00 to 22:00; bottom-set nets, set longlines, and traps may fish from Monday 05:00 through Thursday 22:00. Purse seines and pelagic trawls targeting anchovy or sardine remain prohibited.
04 / conservation context
Why it matters
The Jabuka/Pomo Pit protects important habitat for European hake and Norway lobster, as well as anchovy and sardine. Its nursery and spawning habitat supports sensitive life stages and Adriatic stocks.
05 / methodology
Methodology and caveats
A daily snapshot places public Global Fishing Watch data within the official GFCM zones. AIS fishing effort is modelled apparent activity, AIS presence shows transmissions, and SAR shows radar-based detections. These layers are not interchangeable.
- AIS can be missing, switched off, or under-represent smaller vessels.
- SAR detections establish neither vessel identity nor fishing activity.
- Nearby data show activity close to the FRA, but not inside the regulated zone.
- Authorization, transit, gear, and full operational context cannot be verified from these data alone.
